What's wrong with economics, economists and the Economy with John Hearn
John Hearn’s Dad worked 7 days a week as a toolmaker in the Dagenham factory, instilling an ambition in his son to work as little as possible and achieve as much leisure as he could.
After leaving Oxford University, John has enjoyed a career in academia which has continued into his current semi-retirement, playing cricket, university lecturing and “correcting Central Bankers, Politicians and career economists who tell politicians what they want to hear not what is correct.”

Why does economics so often miss the mark — and what should we be getting right instead? The latest IPO-VID podcast, released today, April 16, 2026, tackles exactly that in “What’s wrong with economics, economists and the Economy.”
Patrick L Young is joined by Professor John Hearn, Visiting Professor at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, for a candid and thought-provoking discussion that challenges conventional thinking about economists, central bankers, and the real-world economy. From academic insight to sharp critique, this episode doesn’t hold back on asking uncomfortable questions about how economic narratives are formed — and who they really serve.
